It can be done at home or by a professional in a salon. Special wax is heated to liquid form, and then spread over the desired hair removal area. Special wax paper backing is applied over the wax. As the wax hardens, it grips the hair; upon removal the strip removes each hair. Waxing is a preferred method of hair removal for women because it is able to remove entire lengths of hair, even those below the skin level. Popular small areas to wax include the eyebrows, upper lip and bikini line. Kits for these small areas can be bought in strips or free-wax form. Larger kits for legs can be purchased at general retailers also. These at-home kits cost between $5 and $10. For salon hair removal for women, waxing can cost anywhere from $5 for an eyebrow to $80 for a full leg.

Currently, the only permanent hair removal for women exists in laser hair removal. The laser is used to produce heat which is transmitted from the hair to the follicle. The inflammation in the hair follicle signals it to enter the resting phase. Hair removal for women using lasers is very complex. There are different lasers to be used on different skin and hair types. This type of hair removal for women requires three to five treatments at four to eight week intervals. In addition, long-term maintenance treatments are necessary to keep hair production completely dormant. Although this method is the most effective at long-term hair removal for women, it is also the most expensive. Single laser sessions can cost between $450 and $800.

Hair removal for women is a common and frequent practice for many. Smooth legs and clean faces are desired attributes for many women. Women often shave frequently, wax periodically, or endure pricey laser treatments to achieve the removal of unwanted hair. The effect and longevity help each woman decide what hair removal procedure is right for her.
